ACTIVITIES - UN MEETINGS

National Level
The cornerstone of the UN review process of the implementation of ICPD is at the national level. Countries are urged to assess their achievements, identify challenges, constraints and opportunities; share lessons learned; and to propose strategies on how best to accelerate the implementation of the ICPD Programme of Action. Ideally, the review process will reinforce and complement efforts to track progress toward other internationally agreed upon goals, including the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs).

Field Inquiry
At the international level, UNFPA has undertaken a Field Inquiry on national experiences among all countries. The Field Inquiry is designed to capture progress achieved by countries in implementing the various commitments and recommendations contained in the ICPD Programme of Action and the Key Actions agreed to in 1999 (at the two-year review of ICPD).
Based on the information UNFPA has received, a global report on national experiences in implementing the ICPD Programme of Action and Key Actions, identifying lessons learned and best practices is being prepared. The report will be released in connection with the annual session of the UNDP/UNFPA Executive Board in June 2004.

Regional Level
There remain four UN Regional Economic Commission meetings to review ICPD in 2004. A number of efforts are underway to ensure the fullest possible participation by NGOs. More information and updates on UN-sponsored activities can be found at www.unfpa.org.

Commission on Population and Development
The 37th session of the Commission on Population and Development (CPD) will meet on March 22-26, 2004, in New York, to review and appraise the progress made in the implementation of the ICPD Programme of Action. This review will follow a thematic approach focusing on selected cross-cutting themes and national experiences in implementing the ICPD Programme of Action. More information on the 37th session can be found at the CPD website.

The UNFPA State of World Population Report for 2004 will focus on ten years of experience implementing the ICPD Programme of Action. This report will include some of the results of the Field Inquiry (see above) as well as other information. The State of World Population Report will be released in September 2004.

UN General Assembly Commemoration
In December 2003, the General Assembly decided to devote one day to a "Commemoration of the tenth anniversary of the International Conference on Population and Development". This day will occur during its fifty-ninth session in 2004. For more information visit the UNFPA website.
